'Night Night #2 is taken from references of a small but perfectly formed kitchen. Kitted out for guests, the kitchen offered lots of opportunities to find pleasure in the tactile touch of real and simple things – glass bottles, paper and string, crisp paper bags.
This is what I wanted to capture in the painting - that when you pad through the house before bed, turning off each light, you see the kitchen sitting quiet and honest. The solitary light catches glass and crockery and metal and suddenly, small everyday things look ethereal and extraordinary.
Night Night #2 is the successor to Night Night, which featured in the 2023 Royal Academy Summer Exhibition. The reaction to that painting convinced me that I was not alone in loving ambient light, and so I’ve been trying to chase the casting of light and shadows in interior scenes ever since.'
