Working in pastel, Liz Balkwill enjoys painting the figure and still life, capturing gesture and using colour to evoke mood.

'No matter what the subject my main aim is to capture the way that light and shadow transforms everyday objects from the mundane to the beautiful.

The combination of the colours and texture were the concept that led to me putting this piece together. A neighbour grows organic vegetables: the way the leeks were trimmed and tied together with string immediately attracted me. Something so humble made to look so appealing, they had to appear in a still-life.'
