Prize Winner: Peter Graham ROI
25th Nov 2024
Artist Peter Graham ROI won the Frank Herring Easel Award at the ROI Annual Exhibition 2023 for his work The Sound of Iona.
A member of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, Graham has a unique flamboyant style. His detailed brushwork combined with looser fluid strokes creates vibrant contrasts of pure colour, line and tone.
Graham has travelled the world painting 'en plein air’, capturing the essence of his subject with brushstrokes full of rich colour - harbours and cafes of the South of France, the coast of Scotland and California, and amidst the grandeur of elegant interiors in London and New York.
Peter Graham is exhibiting several works at this year's Royal Institute of Oil Painters Annual Exhibition. A favourite is The Red Sail - San Tropez, a vibrant colourful large-scale work of 183x183cm.
Graham said of his work:
'Painting has taken me all over the world and the South of France is a favourite location - bustling cafes, pristine harbours, mesmerising reflections. If there is one place I would not like you to miss it is Saint-Tropez! As a Colourist painter this port holds many of the secrets of the artists palette. It is no accident that many of the greatest artists have painted here - Matisse, Dufy, Signac... This is where light and colour mix in such equal measure that the powerful medium of oil paint can take on new meaning on the canvas.'
Peter Graham is also offering a guided tour of the exhibition on Friday 29 November at 12 noon, free with gallery admission.
The tour will cover style of approach, subject, and the most exciting new and emerging artists of the year. Peter will highlight prize winners, the best of the "small paintings wall", and the most influential painters of the ROI.
